Toured TD Garden last summer before the lockout. In one of the goofiest forms of “visiting team pysche-out” that I’ve ever seen, not only is the visiting hockey team’s locker room kind of small (and thus quite crowded when you get 20+ people in there), but the visitor’s locker room showers have their showerheads installed about 8-1/2 feet off the ground. (Which means Zdeno Chara could stand under one of these on skates and still have a good 12”+ of head clearance.) For perspective: those soap dispensers are about 11” tall, based on manufacturer’s website.
Messing with visiting teams’ locker room facilities is nothing new. Showers that only run cold water, turning up the locker room temps to make them feel like a sauna, giving a fresh coat of paint just before the visiting team is due to arrive … anything that might help give even a tiny “psychological edge” by giving the visitors a less-than-warm welcome and making them feel uncomfortable or less rested.
